In support of its consumer protection mandate, the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) Field Operations and Enforcement Division mediates complaints and investigates violations of the Automotive Repair Act and related laws and regulations governing automotive repair and the Smog Check Program.

Depending on the nature and seriousness of confirmed violations, BAR may refer the matter to the Office of the Attorney General to file an accusation, which could result in formal disciplinary action against the licensee. Health and Safety Code violations (i.e., violations related to the Smog Check Program) and unlicensed activity may result in a citation, fine, and/or referral for formal discipline.
