Collection and Use of Personal Information


The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) of the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) collects personal information as authorized by the Information Practices Act (Civil Code section 1798 and following) and the following:

  • Business and Professions Code sections 27, 27.5, 30, and 9880 and following (Automotive Repair Act)
  • Health and Safety Code, division 26, chapter 5, section 44000 and following
  • California Code of Regulations, title 16, division 33, section 3300 and following

BAR uses this information, in accordance with the DCA Privacy Policy, principally to evaluate and process forms from applicants, licensees, and consumers.

Submission of Personal Information


Licensure Applications/Forms

Submission of personal information is mandatory. BAR cannot consider your application/form unless you provide all the requested information.

Consumer Assistance Program Application

Submission of personal information is voluntary. However, if you do not provide the requested personal information, BAR may be unable to process your application for assistance.

Consumer Complaint Form

Submission of personal information is voluntary. If you do not wish to provide personal information, such as your name, home address, or home telephone number, you may remain anonymous. In that case, however, BAR may not be able to contact you or help you resolve your complaint.

Access to Personal Information


You may review the records maintained by BAR that contain your personal information, as permitted by the Information Practices Act. See below for contact information.

Possible Disclosure of Personal Information


BAR makes every effort to protect the personal information you provide. The information you provide, however, may be disclosed in the following circumstances:

  • In response to a Public Records Act request (Government Code section 7920 and following), as allowed by the Information Practices Act.
  • Disclosure to another government agency as required by state or federal law.
  • In response to a court or administrative order, a subpoena, or a search warrant.
