Educational Advisory Group Meets to Discuss Proposed Education Requirements
The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) Educational Advisory Group (EAG) met on January 13, 2022, to discuss the development of draft regulations for Smog Check training institutions and instructors. These regulations would establish minimum training standards for school certification and extend instructor license terms from one year to two. The regulations would also revise continuing education requirements for instructors to ensure that curriculum content and instructor knowledge support evolving automotive technology. The draft regulations are in preliminary stages of development and adoption is at least 18 months away.
Additional topics presented during the meeting included Assembly Bill 471* (Low, Chapter 372, Statutes of 2021), scholarship opportunities, inspector and technician shortages, and a review of the recertification process for institutions and instructors. BAR staff also demonstrated how to access BAR’s new online inspector training service provider, Rise, on BAR’s website, along with steps for completing the new registration process.
