Initial Automotive Repair Dealer (ARD) Registration Application
Step 3: What licenses or permits do I need?
Auto Repair Dealers
If you plan on doing business as an ARD:
- You will need to have a Seller's Permit Number. This is a tax ID number assigned by the California Board of Equalization.
Auto Body and Paint Shops
If you plan on doing business as an auto body and/or paint shop:
- You will need to have the licenses, permits to own and operate the equipment listed in Section 3351.5(a) and (b) of the California Code of Regulations.
- You may need to have a Spray Booth Permit Number. This is assigned by your local Air Quality Management District or Air Pollution District. The Cal/EPA Permit Assistance Centers can help you determine if you are required to have this, or put you in touch with your local district to find out.
- You will need to have a Hazardous Waste Identification Number. This is assigned by either the United States Environmental Protection Agency or the California Environmental Protection Agency.
You may be exempt from some of the requirements for Repair Shops and/or Paint Shops. For more information about this, contact your local city or county and/or Cal/EPA Permit Assistance Centers. They can also tell you if any additional license or permits are required where your business is located.
