Step 1: When do I have to renew my ARD registration?

All ARD registrations must be renewed each year. Your registration will expire on the last day of the month in which it was received. For example, if your original ARD registration was received on January 8, 2004, then it will expire on January 31, 2005.

You may receive a Courtesy Notice from BAR to remind you that your registration is about to expire.

Warning: It is your responsibility to renew your ARD registration regardless of whether you receive a Courtesy Notice from BAR.

What if I am late?

When you are late renewing your ARD registration:

  • If your current registration is delinquent, you will have to pay a $50 delinquent fee as well as any past renewal fees. You will also experience a lapse in your registration period. Please contact BAR's Licensing Unit at (916) 255-3145 if you suspect that your registration may be delinquent, or if you have any questions about your registration.
  • You will be unable to legally perform automotive repairs.
  • If you have a Smog Check Station license, the station will be locked out of the Electronic Transmission System.
  • If you have a Brake and/or Lamp Station license, the license will not be valid until the ARD license is renewed.
  • If your ARD registration is not renewed within 3 years, you will be unable to renew it. You will be required to start over with a new ARD registration application.

Remember: If your current registration is delinquent, you will have to pay additional registration fees and you may experience a lapse in your registration period. Click here if you suspect that your registration is delinquent.
